Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico Faces Scrutiny Over Meeting With Muslim Leaders

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico is facing criticism following a private meet-and-greet with Muslim community leaders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The event, held at a local restaurant, included several prominent Democratic officials and activists, such as Richardson Mayor Amir Omar and state Representative Salman Bhojani.

Scrutiny has centered on the presence of Masoud Khayyat, a coordinator for the Dallas Palestine Coalition. This organization has previously held protests and events alongside the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). In 2025, Texas Governor Greg Abbott designated CAIR as a foreign terrorist organization, a move the group has dismissed as a baseless political maneuver. While the federal government has not adopted this designation, critics of Talarico have highlighted the candidate's association with individuals linked to groups that have organized anti-Israel demonstrations.

Supporters of the meeting have not issued a formal response to the criticism. The event, which was documented in social media posts by attendees, has sparked debate regarding the candidate's political alliances and his engagement with various advocacy groups in the region.
