Sectarian violence targets Christian town of Suqaylabiyah in Syria

The Christian-majority town of Suqaylabiyah in Syria experienced a violent attack on October 3, following an altercation between local shopkeepers and two men from a neighboring Muslim town. After the men were initially driven out for alleged harassment, they returned with a mob that looted homes and businesses. While firearms were used during the incident, no fatalities were reported, though one Alawite woman sustained minor injuries. Local police intervened and made several arrests, including two Christians who were later released.

This event mirrors a similar confrontation that occurred near Easter, which resulted in the cancellation of holiday services. Father Fadi Sankari, a local Orthodox priest, expressed a desire for his community to live without fear or recurring destruction. Meanwhile, Christian Solidarity Worldwide has condemned the violence and called on Syrian authorities to address sectarian incitement. The region has seen a broader rise in instability, including separate attacks on Alawite civilians near the villages of Fahel and Beit Awad in late September and early October.
