Swiss Pro-Life Groups Petition Against Mandatory Abortion Insurance Coverage

A coalition of Swiss pro-life organizations, including Marsch fürs Läbe, EDU Switzerland, and HLI Switzerland, has launched a petition titled "No Free Abortions Through the Back Door!" The campaign opposes a parliamentary decision to include abortion services under mandatory health insurance coverage starting January 1, 2027. This legislative change removes existing cost-sharing requirements and mandates that all insured residents contribute to the funding of these procedures.

Organizers argue that the policy contradicts government efforts to contain healthcare costs and places an undue financial burden on families. Furthermore, the coalition contends that the mandate violates the freedom of conscience protected by the Swiss Federal Constitution by requiring citizens to fund procedures that may conflict with their religious or ethical beliefs. While the groups state they do not oppose coverage for medical emergencies or miscarriages, they advocate for a shift in focus toward expanded counseling and support services for pregnant women. Beatrice Gall, president of Marsch fürs Läbe, stated that the petition aims to promote a different model of solidarity that supports individuals in crisis without forcing the entire insured population to finance elective procedures.
