Sri Lanka Convicts 15 for 2019 Easter Bombings as Advocacy Groups Seek Further Accountability

Based on 2 sources Updated 6 days ago

A Sri Lankan High Court has sentenced 15 men to prison terms ranging from 200 to 260 years for their roles in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. The coordinated suicide attacks, inspired by the Islamic State, targeted three churches and three luxury hotels, resulting in at least 267 deaths and hundreds of injuries. While the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka described the verdict as an important step toward justice, the organization emphasized that investigations must continue to uncover the full network of planners and facilitators behind the tragedy.

The convictions have prompted Christian advocates in neighboring Pakistan to call for greater transparency in their own nation's handling of anti-Christian violence. Sardar Mushtaq Gill of LEAD Ministries expressed concern that Pakistani authorities have not sufficiently pursued the wider chain of responsibility for past attacks, such as the 2013 Peshawar church bombing and the 2016 Lahore park attack. While Pakistani officials maintain that they have actively investigated and arrested suspects, advocates continue to urge regional governments to ensure that those who plan and finance attacks against religious minorities are held fully accountable.
