Welsh Football and Yachting Associations Update Eligibility Policies to Biological Sex

The Football Association of Wales and the Royal Yachting Association have revised their sporting eligibility policies to require participation based on biological sex rather than self-identification. These updates follow legal warnings from the advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom, which contacted ten sporting organizations to argue that policies allowing biological males to compete in female categories violate the Equality Act 2010.

Legal advocates cited the Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers, which affirmed that biological sex defines the terms “man” and “woman” under current law. Robert Clarke of Alliance Defending Freedom stated that sporting bodies have a legal responsibility to align their policies with biology to protect female opportunities and safety. While some organizations have already amended their rules, others are reportedly in the process of doing so.

Former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies welcomed the policy changes but urged further action across all sports. She argued that ambiguous policies continue to create unfair playing fields for women and girls. Alliance Defending Freedom has cautioned that sporting bodies failing to update their policies may face significant legal liability.
