South Sudanese Churches Promote Digital Peace Ahead of National Elections

As South Sudan approaches its first national elections in seven weeks, local churches are actively working to counter the spread of misinformation and hate speech. With the country facing renewed conflict and the arrest of opposition leader Riek Machar, there are significant concerns that digital platforms could be used to incite violence, similar to the role media played during the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

In response, Christian groups and leaders are promoting the “Digital Pledge for Peace,” an initiative that encourages believers to repent for past online behavior and commit to responsible communication. Paul Lueth of the Church Mission Society emphasized that digital interactions have real-world consequences, citing Matthew 5:9 as a call for Christians to act as peacemakers. While infrastructure challenges in rural areas complicate these efforts, organizers continue to host events aimed at fostering constructive dialogue. Regional manager Joan Busolo noted that these initiatives serve as a reminder to the global Church that digital responsibility is a vital aspect of modern faith.
