Reframing Disability in Ministry Through the Image of God
In a recent reflection for the European Disability Network, the author challenges church and mission leaders to shift their perspective on disability. Drawing on the theological foundation that every person is created in the image of God, the author argues that the church must move beyond viewing individuals with disabilities solely as recipients of care. Instead, the author encourages leaders to recognize and empower these individuals as active participants and contributors to ministry.
To illustrate this shift, the author points to the portrayal of disabled characters in popular British detective dramas, such as 'Silent Witness' and 'Vera.' These characters are depicted as competent professionals whose unique perspectives and resilience—often honed through their lived experiences—make them indispensable to their teams. The author suggests that these examples serve as a metaphor for the church, urging leaders to look past physical or learning limitations to discover the gifts, creativity, and empathy that individuals with disabilities bring to the body of Christ.
