Edinburgh's St Giles' Cathedral to Introduce Entry Fees for Non-Scottish Visitors
St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh has announced it will begin charging a £12 admission fee for visitors from outside Scotland. While the historic site, established in 1124, has never previously required payment for entry, the St Giles' Cathedral Charity Trust stated the new policy is necessary to ensure the building's financial viability. Scottish residents will continue to receive free access by providing proof of residency, while all other visitors from the United Kingdom and abroad will be subject to the charge.
The decision comes as the Church of Scotland faces ongoing challenges regarding the maintenance of its historic properties. The Church has recently sought to offload several sites, including transferring ownership of Brechin Cathedral to a community group and requesting that the Scottish government assume responsibility for the Abbey Church of Dunfermline. Cathedral officials noted that the new fee structure aims to support the site's operating costs, which exceed one million pounds annually, and to enhance the cathedral's standing as a major international heritage destination.
