New alliance highlights impact of affordable food clubs on community well-being

Church Action on Poverty has partnered with various charitable and Christian organizations to launch the Affordable Food Alliance. This initiative coincides with the release of a new report titled "Good Food In Every Postcode," which evaluates the effectiveness of affordable food clubs (AFCs) in addressing food insecurity and social isolation across the country.

The report, based on a survey of 4,000 participants, indicates that these clubs provide significant benefits beyond basic nutrition. According to the findings, 77 percent of members feel more connected to their communities, while 75 percent report reduced stress regarding food access. Additionally, 72 percent of respondents stated they are now able to afford more balanced meals, and 67 percent reported an increase in their consumption of fresh produce.

Liam Purcell, Chief Executive of Church Action on Poverty, noted that the alliance aims to amplify the voices of local pantry hosts and members in national policy discussions. The report further highlights that 63 percent of those who previously relied on food banks have been able to reduce or cease their usage after joining an AFC, suggesting that these clubs serve as a vital form of community-based support.
