Protests Erupt Over Planned Church Construction in West Java, Indonesia

Hundreds of residents in Purwakarta, West Java, recently gathered to protest the planned construction of a Simalungun Protestant Christian Church (GKPS) in Cikopo Village. The demonstrators visited local government offices and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to voice concerns regarding the building permit process and the verification of community support for the project.

Despite the opposition, the West Java Ministry of Human Rights confirmed that the congregation has fulfilled all necessary administrative requirements for the construction. The ministry underscored that freedom of religion is a fundamental right protected under Indonesian law. Purwakarta Regent Saepul Bahri Binzein has called for public calm, stating that the local government intends to remain neutral and resolve the dispute through dialogue while adhering to legal standards.
