Catholic Church in Scotland warns against broad conversion therapy ban
The Catholic Parliamentary Office (CPO) in Scotland has issued a formal warning regarding a proposed Scottish National Party (SNP) motion to ban conversion therapy. The CPO argues that the current proposal is of an "exceptional breadth" that could inadvertently criminalize ordinary conversations within family, religious, and healthcare settings.
According to the CPO, the legislation risks creating uncertainty for parents and pastoral workers who provide guidance based on their moral and religious convictions. The office expressed concern that such a ban could discourage open dialogue between parents and children, potentially weakening trust within the home. They maintain that existing laws are already sufficient to address abuse in therapeutic contexts.
In its response, the CPO emphasized that any new legislation must include explicit protections for freedom of conscience, religion, and expression. They argue that individuals should remain free to seek or provide pastoral care that aligns with their faith without fear of legal repercussions.
