Pro-life groups raise concerns over Western Australia assisted dying statistics
Right To Life UK has expressed significant concern regarding the latest annual report on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) in Western Australia. The organization highlighted a 243 percent increase in euthanasia cases over the past four years, noting that these deaths now account for 2.92 percent of all deaths in the state. According to the report, activity levels across VAD services have exceeded initial implementation predictions by more than ten times.
The report also identified potential issues with established safeguards. Data indicates that over 26 percent of patients may have engaged in "doctor shopping" to secure approval, and more than 25 percent of those making a final request bypassed the mandatory nine-day waiting period. Furthermore, the data shows a 34 percent rise in applications from individuals not currently receiving palliative care. Right To Life UK Chief Executive Alisdair Hungerford-Morgan has called for an urgent inquiry, arguing that the figures suggest the system may be failing to detect coercion or adequately protect vulnerable patients.
