Ecuadorian Priest Dies After Crucifix Falls During Livestreamed Mass

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil has confirmed the death of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, who passed away after a large crucifix detached from a wall and struck him during a livestreamed Mass. The incident occurred at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador, while the priest was addressing his congregation. Footage of the event shows the crucifix falling unexpectedly behind him, prompting immediate shock and calls for assistance from those present.

Following the tragedy, the archdiocese held a memorial Mass attended by local clergy and parishioners to honor the late priest's life and service. Communications manager Steven Pincay stated that Father Sánchez Molinari’s remains were transported to Cuenca for burial at Santa Ana Cemetery. The Redemptorist community, including the San Lorenzo Parish where he previously served, has expressed its condolences and requested prayers for his family and the faithful. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the structural failure that led to the crucifix falling.
