Belfast City Hall Illumination for Abortion Awareness Halted After Legal Challenge
Plans to illuminate Belfast City Hall in green to mark International Safe Abortion Day have been suspended following a formal "call in" by members of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The procedure subjects the council's initial 11-3 vote in favor of the illumination to a legal review, assessing whether the decision-making process was procedurally sound or potentially divisive for the community.
The initial decision to light the building had been supported by Sinn Féin, the Alliance, the SDLP, and the Green Party, following a request from the National Women’s Council of Ireland. However, the move faced significant opposition from pro-life organizations, including The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children and Precious Life. A petition organized by Precious Life gathered over 20,000 signatures, arguing that public buildings should serve as neutral civic spaces rather than platforms for controversial social issues.
Catholic Bishop Alan McGuckian also expressed concern, stating that the city hall should function as a space that unites rather than divides the public. While the National Women’s Council of Ireland expressed disappointment regarding the reversal, the legal review process remains ongoing.
