Philippine Lawmakers Propose September as National Family Month

Philippine lawmakers have introduced resolutions in both the Senate and the House of Representatives to officially designate September as National Family Month. Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian filed Senate Proposed Resolution No. 686, while Representative Bienvenido M. Abante Jr. introduced House Resolution No. 1455. The proposed measures aim to establish sustained government programs focused on protecting and strengthening the family unit as the foundation of the nation.

The Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) Family Commission has expressed support for the initiative, encouraging local congregations to advocate for the proposal through prayer and communication with legislators. The commission views the potential designation as a significant opportunity to advance its ongoing ministry priority of restoring and supporting Filipino families.

Representative Abante’s resolution incorporates a Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual (BPSS) framework for government interventions, drawing on biblical references such as Genesis 2:24 and Psalm 127:1. The proposal advocates for comprehensive support systems, including assistance for solo parents, family-supportive wages, and protections against domestic and digital harm, framing these efforts as essential to fulfilling a divine design for society.
