Department of Defense Introduces Western Civilization Course in Military Schools

The U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity is launching a new high school course this fall focused on Western civilization and Christianity. Operated by the federal government for approximately 70,000 children of military and civilian personnel, the school system is implementing this curriculum as part of an initiative to emphasize patriotic values and classical learning. The course utilizes the textbook "The Golden Thread," published by Encounter Books, with lesson plans developed in collaboration with Hillsdale College.

The curriculum highlights the influence of early Christianity on human rights and Western development. However, the content has drawn criticism from some historians and educators who argue the material presents a biased perspective. Critics contend that the text overly equates Western civilization with Christianity while characterizing Islam as a persistent threat, citing the book's framing of the Crusades and modern conflicts. Yale professor Phil Gorski suggested that the course may serve as a vehicle for introducing classical Christian education into the federal school system. Supporters of the initiative, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, view the shift as a necessary redirection toward traditional values.
