Kansas Pastors Call for Adam Hamilton to Withdraw from Senate Race

A group of over 500 pastors and lay leaders has issued an open letter urging Rev. Adam Hamilton, the founding pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, to withdraw from his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Hamilton, a Democrat, is currently challenging incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall in a race that recent polling indicates is within the margin of error.

Led by Kyle Lammott of Exodus Church in Wichita, the signatories challenge several of Hamilton’s theological positions. The letter specifically criticizes Hamilton’s 2022 sermon suggesting that followers of other religions may not face eternal separation from God, arguing that this view undermines the necessity of faith in Christ. Furthermore, the group calls for repentance regarding Hamilton’s stance on biblical inerrancy, his support for the United Methodist Church’s recent policy changes regarding homosexual practice, and his position on abortion access.

In the letter, Lammott characterizes the request as a plea from a fellow believer, urging Hamilton to reconsider his public teachings on salvation, Scripture, and social issues. Hamilton, who leads the largest United Methodist congregation in the United States, has not publicly responded to the letter.
