Minnesota Pastor Addresses Somali Gang Violence and Resettlement Policies
Following a shooting at an Eden Prairie High School football game on October 2 that left two teenagers injured, Pastor Rob Ketterling of River Valley Church has called for a public address of gang-related violence in Minnesota. Police have identified 18-year-old Adam Abdihakeem Adam as a suspect in the incident, which occurred in the stadium parking lot. Ketterling, who leads a 10,000-member congregation, urged community leaders and Christians to confront the issue directly, stating that failing to acknowledge the problem hinders potential solutions.
In subsequent social media posts, Ketterling characterized the state's long-standing Somali resettlement efforts as a failure of "compassion without a standard." He argued that the integration of refugees from clan-based societies into the local welfare system has created significant social challenges. While noting that the Somali population in Minnesota is estimated between 80,000 and 110,000, Ketterling emphasized that the focus should shift toward finding practical solutions to improve public safety and community stability. His comments have sparked a broader conversation regarding the impact of refugee resettlement policies and the role of faith-based organizations in the state.
