Pastor Marvin Winans Denies Receiving Compensation Reported in Nonprofit Tax Filings

Pastor Marvin Winans of Perfecting Church in Detroit has publicly denied receiving a salary from the Perfecting Community Development Corporation, despite IRS filings indicating he was paid over $545,000 in 2025. During a recent Bible study, Winans told his congregation that he has never received any compensation from the nonprofit, attributing the reported figures to an accounting error. He stated that while he serves as president and signs the organization's records, he has not personally collected any funds from the entity.

The nonprofit’s 2025 Form 990, which is used by tax-exempt organizations to report financial operations to the IRS, lists Winans as receiving $538,955 in base compensation for a 20-hour work week. A supplemental Schedule J document further details an additional $6,781 in reportable compensation, bringing the total to $545,736. The Perfecting Community Development Corporation operates several local initiatives, including a homeless shelter for women and children, a community care center, and a summer camp program.
