Pastor Arrested During Protest Outside Chinese Embassy in Washington
The Rev. Patrick Mahoney, leader of the Christian Defense Coalition, was arrested by the United States Secret Service on September 28 while praying on a sidewalk outside the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. Mahoney was protesting the recent state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing opposition to the U.S. government's reception of the leader amid concerns regarding human rights abuses and the treatment of religious minorities in China.
During the demonstration, Mahoney placed a red fabric on the sidewalk inscribed with the names of persecuted individuals and groups, including Uyghurs, Falun Gong practitioners, and media mogul Jimmy Lai. Mahoney reported that Chinese diplomats appeared agitated by the protest and alleged that officials requested his removal, claiming the sidewalk was Chinese property. Mahoney disputed this assertion, citing previous demonstrations at the location and legal correspondence from the American Center for Law and Justice affirming the public nature of the sidewalk. Following his arrest, Mahoney characterized the incident as a concerning restriction on First Amendment rights.
