British Parliament hosts event reflecting on historical treatment of Jewish refugees
A meeting held at the British House of Commons on October 15 addressed the historical impact of British policies toward Jewish refugees during the Holocaust era. Organized by the non-profit group Repairing the Breach, the event, titled "Heroic Journeys to the Promised Land," examined the 1939 White Paper that restricted Jewish immigration to British Mandate Palestine and the 1947 interception of the Exodus ship.
Approximately 60 attendees, including members of the Jewish community, an Israeli delegation, and political figures such as Lord Pickles, Rebecca Smith, and former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, gathered to hear testimonies. Speakers included relatives of victims from the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, drawing parallels between historical trauma and contemporary antisemitism. Maor Rozenberg shared the story of his grandmother, Pnina, who survived the Exodus ship as a teenager and later saw her family affected by the 2023 massacre. Participants expressed regret over past government actions and emphasized the importance of ensuring such events are not repeated.
