N.T. Wright addresses interpretation of Romans 11 at Dallas conference
At the "Fresh Challenge of Romans" conference held in Dallas from November 1-4, 2026, theologian N.T. Wright presented an analysis of Romans 11:26. Drawing on the text, Wright argued that the promise that "all Israel will be saved" refers to the unified body of Jewish and Gentile believers rather than a future, large-scale salvation event for ethnic Israel alone.
Wright emphasized that the phrase "in this way"—as reflected in the updated NRSV—describes the method of God's salvation for the entire community of faith. He cautioned against interpretations suggesting a future, mass conversion of ethnic Judeans or a specific national event in the Middle East, characterizing such views as "modern-day fantasy." While maintaining that God remains committed to the original calling of the Jewish people, Wright asserted that God’s redemptive purposes are currently fulfilled through a mixed community of believers. He concluded by stressing the importance of preserving the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and warned against tendencies to sever that connection.
