N.T. Wright Discusses Biblical Perspectives on the Afterlife and Near-Death Experiences

Theologian N.T. Wright recently addressed the growing interest in near-death experiences, cautioning believers against using such accounts as the foundation for their understanding of the afterlife. Speaking on his podcast, Wright emphasized that while these experiences should not be dismissed outright, they must be distinguished from the biblical promise of the future resurrection of the body and the renewal of all creation.

Drawing on passages such as Romans 8, 1 Corinthians 15, and Revelation 21, Wright explained that the New Testament focuses on the dramatic renewal of the world at the end of the age. He argued that the concept of an inherently immortal soul escaping the body at death is more reflective of Platonic philosophy than biblical anthropology. Instead, he taught that the Holy Spirit sustains the spirits of deceased Christians in the presence of Christ until the final resurrection, referencing the Apostle Paul’s hope in Philippians 1 to depart and be with the Lord.
