New Jersey Governor Signs Law Protecting Abortion and Gender-Affirming Care Access

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed Senate Bill 2260, a measure designed to protect access to abortion and gender-affirming medical procedures within the state. The law criminalizes the physical obstruction of facilities providing these services and prohibits actions intended to intimidate, threaten, or coerce patients or providers. Violations of the new statute can result in prison sentences ranging from 18 months to 10 years, alongside significant civil fines enforced by the state’s Attorney General.

The legislation also establishes New Jersey as a protective jurisdiction by prohibiting state cooperation with out-of-state criminal investigations related to abortion or gender-transition procedures performed on minors. Governor Sherrill stated that the law serves as a defense of reproductive and gender-affirming freedoms against external restrictions. Conversely, pro-life leaders have criticized the move, characterizing the legislation as an effort to solidify the state’s status as a haven for abortion providers.
