Nicky Gumbel elected to Church of England General Synod

The Reverend Nicky Gumbel, founder of the Alpha Course, has been elected to the Church of England’s General Synod. Representing the Diocese of London in the House of Clergy, Gumbel will serve a five-year term on the national governing body responsible for church legislation, worship, and budgetary decisions.

In his election manifesto, Gumbel emphasized the need for the Church to prioritize evangelism over internal institutional disputes. He expressed optimism regarding the current leadership transition within the Church, describing the period as a "new season." Gumbel highlighted a perceived growing interest in Christianity among younger generations and proposed the development of a national leadership pathway to support those called to full-time ministry.

Additionally, Gumbel advocated for unity among believers and suggested that any church property sales should be restricted to other Christian organizations. Since concluding his 17-year tenure as vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton in 2022, Gumbel has served as a full-time chaplain for the Alpha Course, an international initiative designed to introduce individuals to the Christian faith.
