Nicaraguan Government Releases Video of Detained Bishop Abelardo Mata

The Nicaraguan government recently released a video interview featuring 80-year-old Bishop Emeritus Abelardo Mata, who has been in state custody since his arrest on June 29, 2026. In the footage, broadcast by the state-controlled Canal 6, the bishop is seen at an estate in Tisma, where officials claim he has resided since July 4. During the interview with pro-government journalist Adolfo Pastrán, Bishop Mata stated that he is receiving care and spending his time in prayer and study, describing his current situation as a monastic life.

Critics of the Nicaraguan regime, including Father Edwing Román, have dismissed the video as propaganda. Román argued that the interview omits the circumstances of the bishop's initial arrest at a hospital and fails to acknowledge that the bishop remains under police guard and is not free to leave the property. Román characterized the release of the video as a response to international pressure, noting that Bishop Mata has long been a vocal critic of the government and that his detention reflects a broader pattern of harassment against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua.
