U.S. Refugee Admissions Cap Set at 17,500 for Fiscal Year 2027
The United States government has announced a refugee admissions cap of 17,500 for the 2027 fiscal year. The new policy primarily designates these slots for Afrikaners from South Africa, citing concerns over racially motivated violence. Additionally, the administration has maintained the suspension of the broader U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, allowing exceptions only for cases deemed to be in the national interest.
Advocacy groups, including World Relief and the International Rescue Committee, have expressed concern regarding the policy. Critics argue that limiting access to a single nationality excludes thousands of individuals fleeing armed conflict and religious persecution who have been awaiting resettlement for years. This cap follows a trend of declining admission ceilings, which have fluctuated significantly from the 109,000-person limit seen during the Biden administration to the 7,500-slot initial ceiling set by President Trump last year.
