Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Demands End to Corruption Trial
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the immediate termination of his long-running corruption trial, alleging that the proceedings are a politically motivated effort to remove him from office. In a recent interview, Netanyahu characterized the legal action as a "crude political hunting" and demanded criminal investigations into former Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit and several senior prosecutors.
The demand follows testimony from Mandelblit in the Jerusalem District Court, where he admitted that some investigative actions were taken without his specific authorization, though he maintained he approved the primary steps. Netanyahu’s defense team, led by attorney Amit Hadad, has sought to determine if political bias influenced the prosecution. The court has yet to rule on whether Mandelblit must answer questions regarding potential political motivations.
Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The trial, which began in 2020, remains a focal point of political discourse as Israel approaches parliamentary elections on October 27. The Likud party continues to argue that the cases were fabricated to achieve political goals that could not be secured through the electoral process.
