Flash Floods in Nepal and Tibet Leave Hundreds Dead and Missing

Catastrophic flash floods triggered by a massive glacier collapse have devastated communities along the Nepal-Tibet border. Authorities report at least 160 confirmed deaths, with hundreds more missing. Nepal’s disaster management agency reports 403 people missing, including 341 foreign nationals from countries such as India, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, Chinese state media reports three deaths and 265 missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County.

Experts believe the disaster was caused by an ice-rock slide from a glacier at an altitude of 5,200 meters. While initial reports suggested a seismic event, the U.S. Geological Survey clarified that the detected tremors were caused by the landslide itself. The resulting torrent of mud and debris destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges, complicating ongoing search-and-rescue efforts.

Christian leaders have responded to the tragedy with calls for prayer and support. The Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Leo XIV expressed their condolences for the bereaved, while evangelist Franklin Graham described the scenes as "apocalyptic." Locally, the Catholic Church in Nepal is coordinating with Caritas to assess needs, noting that while many families are safe, some clergy remain stranded due to the widespread destruction.
