Christian Relief Efforts Underway Following Catastrophic Himalayan Floods

A massive landslide triggered by a glacial collapse on August 26 has caused widespread devastation across the Nepal-Tibet border. The event, which the U.S. Geological Survey identified as a 5.2-magnitude landslide, sent a torrent of ice, rock, and debris through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river valleys. As of early September, authorities reported over 1,100 confirmed deaths, with thousands more missing. The disaster destroyed homes, schools, and infrastructure, leaving many remote communities accessible only by air or mountain bike.

Christian organizations and local church networks are actively responding to the crisis. Groups including the National Churches Fellowship of Nepal, the Nepal Christian Society, and Caritas Nepal are providing food, medical aid, and shelter to survivors regardless of their religious background. Several church buildings were reported damaged or destroyed, and leaders have requested global prayer for the victims and rescue workers. Organizations such as GFA World, Samaritan’s Purse, and Operation Blessing are mobilizing long-term support for those who lost their livelihoods, as recovery efforts continue in the face of significant communication and transportation challenges.
