Nebraska City Updates Hiring Policy Following Homeschool Graduate's Testimony

The Fremont, Nebraska, City Council has unanimously approved a resolution to allow homeschool graduates without accredited diplomas to apply for city positions. The policy change follows the experience of Andrew Coates, a 22-year-old volunteer firefighter who was previously ineligible for full-time employment because his high school education was not from an accredited institution. Under the new resolution, the city will now recognize graduation certificates issued by non-approved or home school entities.

Coates and his father, Seth, advocated for the change over a five-month period, eventually bringing the issue to public attention. During a recent appearance at the Family Research Council’s Pray Vote Stand Summit, the family shared their story, with Seth Coates expressing gratitude for the community support they received once the situation became public. Following the council's 8-0 vote, the city has officially moved away from its previous requirement that applicants hold an accredited diploma or G.E.D. to mitigate perceived liability risks.
