Lifeway Research Finds Increasing Selectivity Regarding Biblical Truth Among US Churchgoers

A new study from Lifeway Research indicates that a growing number of US Protestant churchgoers are adopting a selective approach to Scripture. The survey, which polled 1,200 monthly church attendees in September 2025, found that 28% of respondents believe some biblical truths become obsolete as culture evolves, an increase from 24% in 2019. Additionally, 34% of participants reported accepting only those biblical teachings that align with their personal beliefs, up from 30% six years prior.
The data reveals a significant generational divide, with 54% of churchgoers aged 18 to 29 agreeing that cultural shifts can render biblical truths obsolete, compared to only 13% of those aged 65 and older. While most respondents expressed confidence in their ability to find personal relevance in Scripture, Lifeway Executive Director Scott McConnell noted that the findings reflect a trend toward viewing biblical authority through a subjective lens. McConnell emphasized the theological perspective that God’s truth remains unchanging, citing James 1:17 to contrast the nature of Scripture with the evolving views of modern culture.
