Report Documents Over 4,200 Christian Deaths in Nigeria This Year
A new report from the U.S.-based nonprofit Equipping the Persecuted (ETP) states that 4,216 Christians have been killed in Nigeria between January 1 and September 8, 2026. The organization, which bases its findings on eyewitness accounts, burial records, and on-the-ground verification, estimates that these incidents have resulted in the displacement of over five million people and the destruction of more than 600 Christian communities.
The report, titled 'Crisis in the Middle Belt: Religious Persecution and Security Failure in Nigeria,' challenges the characterization of these events as merely communal or land-based disputes. Instead, ETP argues that the violence is largely religiously motivated and executed by organized militant networks, including Fulani militants and groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, and Lakurawa. The authors contend that the systematic nature of the attacks, including the burning of churches and permanent displacement of residents, indicates a broader pattern of religious persecution rather than isolated conflicts.
