Monk Killed and Two Injured in Attack at Ukrainian Monastery

A monk was killed and two other individuals were seriously wounded during an attack at the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Church officials reported that the incident occurred on Sunday morning near St. Nicholas Church. Monk Varsonofiy Turyansky died in the assault, while Monk Hryhoriy and a refugee named Andriy Kyriyenko sustained severe injuries, including lung wounds, and were transported to a hospital in Kharkiv for treatment.

Following the attack, Monk Hryhoriy alerted the monastery, leading to the arrival of law enforcement. While criminal proceedings have been initiated, authorities have not yet identified the assailants or determined a motive for the violence. The Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra is a prominent site belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), an institution that has faced increased scrutiny and legislative pressure in Ukraine due to its historical ties to the Russian Orthodox Church. The UOC declared its independence from Moscow in 2022, though the status of its institutional connections remains a subject of ongoing national debate.
