Monk Killed and Two Wounded in Attack at Ukrainian Monastery

A monk, identified as Varsonofiy Turyansky, was killed and two others were seriously wounded during an attack at the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra in Ukraine’s Donetsk region on August 23. The monastery reported that Monk Hryhoriy and a refugee named Andriy Kyriyenko sustained severe injuries, including lung wounds, during the incident near St. Nicholas Church. While Hryhoriy managed to alert authorities, the identities and motives of the assailants remain unknown as police investigations continue.

The Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra is part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which declared independence from the Russian Orthodox Church in 2022 following the Russian invasion. The UOC’s status remains a point of tension, as the Ukrainian government has implemented legislation targeting religious organizations with perceived ties to Russia. Amsterdam & Partners LLP, a law firm representing the UOC, characterized the attack as part of an escalating campaign of violence against the church and criticized the state for failing to provide adequate protection, while calling for a thorough investigation into the murder.
