Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde Announces Plans to Retire in 2028

Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington has announced her intention to step down from her position in 2028. In a letter to her diocese, the 66-year-old bishop stated that she will conclude her tenure on June 3, 2028, following the election of her successor at the Diocesan Convention earlier that year. Budde expressed her commitment to ensuring a smooth leadership transition for the diocese.

Budde gained national attention in January 2025 for her sermon at the National Prayer Service, where she directly addressed President Donald Trump. During the service, she urged the president to show mercy toward immigrants and the LGBTQ community, citing concerns for those who fear for their safety or legal status. The sermon drew a polarized response, with progressive supporters praising her message while conservative critics characterized the remarks as divisive and partisan.
