Memphis Pastor and Community Gift Car to Arrested Street Vendor
Demarcus Dickerson, a 33-year-old street vendor in Memphis, Tennessee, received a vehicle and business support from local community members and a pastor following his recent arrest. Dickerson, who had sold beverages at a local intersection for six years, was taken into custody on October 6 for obstructing a highway. Memphis police stated they had previously warned him to move to the sidewalk for his safety, but arrested him after he returned to the intersection later that day.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office subsequently declined to prosecute the charges against Dickerson. In response to the incident, Gregory D. Stapleton Jr., pastor of Greater Impact Faith Church, helped organize a GoFundMe campaign and coordinated with community members to provide Dickerson with a car. Dickerson expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the community's response helped him feel cared for after the distress of his arrest.
