Christian leaders discuss challenges of refugee ministry in South Asia

Christian practitioners serving displaced populations in South Asia recently gathered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to address the theological and practical complexities of their work. The South Asia Consultation on Forced Displacement, Protection, and Durable Solutions, held September 14-16, 2026, brought together representatives from India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to discuss the theology of suffering, refugee reintegration, and legal migration pathways.

During the event, organized by the humanitarian group Philoi Global, attendees reported significant feelings of isolation and personal risk. Participants noted that refugee ministry is often overlooked by local churches and viewed primarily as a security concern by government authorities. Those working in the field described facing financial, social, and political pressures, with some Indian delegates highlighting how regulatory restrictions have hindered their ability to assist those in need.

While the consultation included members of the Refugee Highway Partnership, organizers noted that representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar were unable to attend due to travel constraints. The report emphasized that many practitioners feel misunderstood by institutional leadership, underscoring the need for greater support for those engaged in humanitarian efforts within the region.
