Understanding the Spiritual Purpose of Old Testament History

In a recent teaching, Ligonier Ministries explores the theological significance of the Book of Judges, emphasizing that Old Testament historical accounts serve as more than mere records of past events. Drawing on Romans 15:4 and 1 Corinthians 10:11, the author explains that these narratives were written for the instruction of believers, intended to communicate spiritual lessons and elicit a faithful response.

The teaching highlights that the Hebrew Bible categorizes historical books within the section of the Prophets, suggesting a deeper, prophetic purpose behind the stories. The author argues that the overarching framework for interpreting this history is Genesis 3:15, known as the protoevangelium. By tracing the conflict between the offspring of the serpent and the offspring of the woman, the author posits that redemptive history reveals a continuous tension between Satan’s attempts to hinder the gospel and God’s sovereign resolve to fulfill His redemptive plan through Christ.
