Korean Mission Scholars Discuss Global Trends and Pentecostalism

The Korean Society of Missiology convened its Fourth Regular Academic Conference on August 8 at Geumnan Church in Seoul. Under the theme "Trends in Contemporary Mission Theology Research," the event brought together scholars to analyze the evolving landscape of global Christianity, focusing on the expansion of the faith in the Global South and the complexities of mission work.

Dr. Oh Seung-wook of Yonsei University presented research on the global growth of Pentecostalism, noting that adherents reached approximately 664 million by 2025. He explored the tension between the movement's early egalitarian ideals and the challenges faced during institutionalization, specifically regarding racial integration and the role of women in leadership. The conference also featured presentations on the Korean diaspora, the 19th-century American Restoration Movement, and the development of "narrative missiology" as a framework for studying local faith communities.
