Kenyan Court Convicts Cult Leader and Associates in Mass Starvation Deaths

A Kenyan court in Mombasa has convicted Paul Mackenzie and 28 associates of murdering 191 people, the vast majority of whom were children. Justice Diana Mochache ruled that Mackenzie, the former leader of Good News International Ministries, instructed his followers to starve themselves and their children to death under the belief that it would allow them to meet Jesus. The convictions follow the 2023 discovery of over 400 bodies in the Shakahola forest, where Mackenzie had relocated his followers after closing his church in 2019.

During the trial, witnesses testified that the group prohibited modern medicine and education, and that those who refused to participate in the mandated fasting were often subjected to violence. While Mackenzie and his co-defendants maintained their innocence, claiming no one was forced to die, the court found the evidence sufficient for conviction. The defendants are scheduled for sentencing on November 6, with additional legal proceedings regarding terrorism and radicalization charges still pending. The case has prompted national reflection on the government's role in monitoring religious organizations and preventing such tragedies.
