J.R.R. Tolkien to be Honored with Westminster Abbey Memorial

Westminster Abbey has announced that a memorial for author and scholar J.R.R. Tolkien will be unveiled in the historic Poets’ Corner in spring 2027. The dedication will coincide with the 90th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit and the 50th anniversary of The Silmarillion. The memorial will be situated near that of C.S. Lewis, Tolkien’s close friend and fellow member of the literary group known as the Inklings.

Designed by artist Stephen Broadbent, the two-and-a-half-meter-tall memorial is inspired by Tolkien’s “Tree of Tales.” It will be constructed from native British woods, including timber from a black pine tree at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden that was a favorite of the author. The Very Rev. David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, praised Tolkien’s “Christian imagination” and his ability to illustrate the courageous nature of virtue.

Tolkien, a lifelong Catholic, and Lewis, an Anglican convert, shared a profound intellectual and spiritual friendship. Tolkien’s perspective on Christianity as the “true myth” was instrumental in Lewis’s own conversion. While the two men held differing views on denominational affiliation, their shared faith and literary contributions remain central to their legacy.
