Senator Josh Hawley Calls for National Ban on Abortion Drug Mifepristone

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, speaking at the Family Research Council’s Pray Vote Stand Summit in Leesburg, Virginia, has renewed his call for a federal ban on the abortion drug mifepristone. During the event, Hawley urged the Trump administration to expedite a safety review of the medication and advocated for the passage of his proposed legislation, the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, which aims to revoke the drug's FDA approval.

Hawley argued that the drug poses significant health risks to women and criticized the pharmaceutical industry for its role in the distribution of abortion pills. He further contended that the FDA’s decision to allow the drug to be sent through the mail has undermined state-level abortion restrictions. Pro-life advocates have expressed frustration over reports that the administration's anticipated safety study of the drug has been delayed until after the 2026 midterm elections. The senator emphasized that restricting access to chemical abortion remains a primary objective for those seeking to reduce abortion rates in the United States.
