Jordan Launches $120 Million Development Project for Baptism Site Millennium

The Jordanian government has initiated a major development project surrounding the Al-Maghtas Baptism Site of Jesus Christ in preparation for the upcoming second millennium celebration of the event. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan will lead a high-level steering committee, which includes cabinet ministers, church leaders, and tourism officials, to oversee the site's expansion and infrastructure improvements.

On August 12, 2026, officials signed four agreements totaling $120 million to develop 1,400 dunams of land adjacent to the site. The planned projects include a $50 million museum, a $40 million pilgrim and visitor village designed in a biblical style, $27 million in infrastructure upgrades, and a $3 million green corridor. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazin described the initiative as a strategic national partnership intended to enhance Jordan's international profile and preserve its cultural heritage. Senator Michael Nazzal noted that the Prime Minister's direct involvement signals a significant commitment from state institutions to ensure the success of the historic commemoration.
