John Lennox Warns Against AI-Induced Spiritual Starvation

In a discussion with apologist Wes Huff at the Sing! Conference, Oxford mathematician John Lennox cautioned that the rise of artificial intelligence may lead to a decline in reading habits, potentially resulting in spiritual starvation for younger generations. Lennox argued that as people increasingly rely on AI for immediate answers, they may neglect the practice of reading and prayerfully meditating on Scripture. He emphasized that the Bible serves as the primary offensive weapon for the Christian faith, and warned that failing to engage directly with the text could leave the Church defenseless.

The conversation, which took place during an event marking the 500th anniversary of William Tyndale’s English New Testament, highlighted the importance of personal engagement with the Bible. Huff expressed concern that believers might treat AI as a new intermediary, substituting AI-generated summaries for the deeper, meditative study of God’s Word. Both speakers encouraged Christians to prioritize direct interaction with Scripture, noting that while technology offers benefits in areas like Bible translation, it should not replace the essential discipline of reading the biblical text itself.
