Antisemitic Hate Crimes Account for Over Half of NYC Incidents in 2026

New York City Police Department data indicates that Jewish residents were the targets of 245 confirmed hate crimes between January and September 2026. This figure represents 52.9% of the 463 total hate crimes reported in the city during that period. While the Jewish population makes up approximately 10% of the city's residents, they remain the most frequent targets of bias-motivated incidents, with anti-Jewish crimes occurring at nearly five times the rate of the next-largest category, which involves bias against sexual orientation.

These statistics emerge despite a broader downward trend in major crime across New York City, where murders and shooting incidents have reached historic lows. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the persistent rise in antisemitism as deeply concerning. In response, the department has increased security measures around synagogues and Jewish institutions, including an unprecedented deployment of officers during the recent High Holy Days. Authorities have pledged continued support to these communities as they mark the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks in Israel.
