Mass Shooting at Funeral in Jordan Leaves Six Dead

A violent attack occurred on October 23, 2026, at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Hmood, located in Jordan’s Karak Province. Gunmen opened fire on a funeral gathering, resulting in at least six deaths and 28 injuries. Witnesses reported that the assailants shouted jihadist slogans during the assault, which took place in a town known for its predominantly Christian population.

Jordanian officials, including Interior Minister Mazen al-Farrayeh, have officially classified the incident as a terrorist operation carried out by extremists. King Abdullah condemned the violence, vowing a harsh response against those responsible. While Jordan is generally recognized for peaceful inter-faith coexistence, this rare act of violence has prompted a significant security response as authorities search for the perpetrators. Christians currently comprise approximately 2 to 3 percent of the total population in Jordan.
