Irish Archbishops Call for Peace Amid Drumcree Parade Dispute
Catholic Archbishop Eamon Martin and Church of Ireland Archbishop John McDowell have issued a joint appeal for reconciliation regarding the ongoing stand-off over an Orange Order parade in Portadown. The dispute centers on a march from Drumcree Church along the Garvaghy Road, a route that has been a source of tension for decades. Although the Parades Commission authorized the march, police blocked the procession on September 27 following protests from local residents.
The archbishops urged all parties to avoid inflammatory language and to prioritize the common good while respecting the rule of law. Acknowledging the historical pain associated with the area, they called for an urgent, inclusive initiative to resolve the crisis. The church leaders also released a video featuring the Prayer for Peace of Saint Francis, inviting Christians internationally to join them in praying for healing and reconciliation. As legal challenges against the parade permission continue, the archbishops expressed their own commitment to assisting the community in finding a peaceful path forward.
