Iona Community opposes proposed offshore wind farm near historic Scottish site

The Iona Community, an ecumenical group based on the historic Scottish island of Iona, has formally expressed opposition to plans for a large-scale offshore wind farm. The proposed project includes at least 91 turbines, each exceeding 1,000 feet in height, located within 13 miles of the island. The site is historically significant as the location of a 6th-century monastery founded by St. Columba.

Ruth Harvey, leader of the Iona Community, stated that while the organization supports the transition to renewable energy as a moral imperative, they believe this specific project would negatively impact the island’s sacred character. Harvey argued that the industrial scale of the turbines would disrupt the peace sought by pilgrims visiting the site. Conversely, ScottishPower Renewables maintains that the development is a vital green energy initiative, asserting that the wind farm would generate enough electricity to power two million homes.
