Indonesian Islamic Council Calls for Cancellation of Andrea Bocelli Concerts
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has formally requested that the government cancel upcoming performances by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The council, which holds significant influence in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, cited concerns regarding the singer’s alleged past support for Israel. Specifically, officials pointed to a 2010 fundraising event in Los Angeles and a 2022 performance in Tel Aviv as reasons to block his scheduled shows at the Borobudur Temple and in Jakarta.
This appeal follows the recent government decision to deny a permit for an October 24 concert by American Gospel artist Israel Houghton, citing similar concerns over his public stance on Israel. In response to the calls for his cancellation, Bocelli issued a statement clarifying that his Indonesian tour is intended to promote music and humanity. He emphasized that no proceeds from these performances would be directed toward political or military causes. While the council maintains that the country should avoid hosting individuals associated with Zionism, observers note that past participation in fundraising events does not necessarily confirm personal financial support for military activities.
