Indonesia Stock Market Plummets Amid Political Unrest and Regulatory Concerns

Indonesia’s stock market experienced its most significant decline since the 1998 Asian financial crisis on Friday, with the Jakarta Composite Index falling 11.57 percent. The Indonesia Stock Exchange briefly suspended trading after an initial 8 percent drop. While the market decline followed an announcement by MSCI regarding the potential removal of Indonesia from its emerging-market indexes due to transparency and governance concerns, the economic instability coincides with rising political tensions.

Social media platforms have seen the circulation of messages calling for the overthrow of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, using slogans such as "Indonesia is facing a justice emergency." One widely shared post garnered hundreds of thousands of interactions, though the origin and organizational backing of these calls remain unclear. There is no confirmed evidence linking the online revolutionary rhetoric directly to the market crash.

Local citizens, including members of the Christian community, have expressed anxiety regarding the nation's stability. While some residents had hoped for economic prosperity under the current leadership, the combination of financial volatility and political agitation has raised fears of potential unrest.
