Hungary Commemorates 70th Anniversary of 1956 Revolution Amid Political Transition
Hungary observed the 70th anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet revolution on Friday with official ceremonies in Budapest. Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who assumed office in May following the defeat of Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, hosted over 40 foreign delegations, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. The events honored the historical struggle for freedom and democracy, with leaders emphasizing the nation's current path toward European integration.
The commemorations occurred against a backdrop of significant political change and ongoing legal investigations. While official ceremonies took place at Parliament, supporters of the former administration held a separate, smaller march along the Danube. Meanwhile, the government continues to pursue corruption inquiries related to the previous administration. Notably, former central bank governor György Matolcsy was recently detained on fraud allegations, a charge he denies. As the nation reflects on its history, the current government has pledged to maintain accountability while upholding the rule of law.
